My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song of the day July 1st, 2024

Holdin On – Flume Feat. Freddie Gibbs

One of my favorite albums covers as well

Happy Monday! I believe I first heard the original version of this track while on a spring break trip with some good friends in high school, and it was one of the first dance/electronic songs that I really enjoyed upon first listen. One of my favorite things in modern music is a really good sample, and in this case, the sample is one of the best. Flume, an Australian DJ and artist, takes Anthony White’s 1977 cover of Otis Redding’s ’66 classic “I Can’t Turn You Loose” and chops it up in a way that really adds a wild and soulful vibe to an already super energetic beat.

I was debating which version to feature in today’s post, and I ended up going with the track from the deluxe version of the self-titled debut from Flume. It features former D1 football player (Ball State) turned rapper, Freddie Gibbs, who hails from Gary, Indiana. Also the hometown of none other than Michael Jackson. Gibbs delivers some pretty standard verses, but I still really like what he adds to the song. This is a great song to start the day off with on the ride to work, and it really woke me up this AM.
