Me and Your Mama (Let Me Into Your Heart) – Childish Gambino

Today’s song is by one of my favorite creators of art of all time, Donald Glover. His body of work is absolutely incredible. Growing up in Stone Mountain, GA, and starting out as a writer for 30 Rock, he then went on to write for and star in Community, and then quitting that to pursue a career in rap as Childish Gambino, which has now evolved into this amazing neo-soul type of thing. Not to mention his many film and television projects, including what is quite possibly my favorite show of all time, Atlanta. I really would encourage anyone to check out at least some of what he’s worked on.

Me and Your Mama from his outstanding album “Awaken, My Love!” is one of the coolest songs I think I’ve ever heard. It begins with an amazing psychedelic soul vibe, and then almost out of nowhere, you’re hit with this awesome, but still psychedelic, guitar and some of my favorite vocals ever recorded. The first time I heard it, it was honestly pretty jarring, but in the best way possible. It makes me wonder if Glover took a little inspiration from Franz Joseph Haydn, known for his “Surprise!” symphony. I would definitely recommend listening to this one with headphones or in the car to get the full effect.
