Midas – Wunderhorse

Another short one today! Wunderhorse is one of my favorite new bands, formed out of a solo project started during the pandemic in England. Their first and, at the time of writing, only album, 2022’s Cub, (which I plan on featuring in an album of the month post at some point in the future) really brought back the feelings of when I was first getting into 90s rock, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. However, it doesn’t feel like they’re trying to imitate any sort of sound or specific band. They’re just a really damn good rock band.
Midas was the first single Wunderhorse put out for their upcoming sophomore album, also titled Midas. The slightly distorted guitar and scratchy vocals really work well together, and the guitar especially, to me, is very Pearl Jam-esque (think Stone Gossard rather than Mike McCready). Lyrically, the song seems to be dealing with greed, probably in relation to the music industry. My first thoughts jumped to the epic “Have a Cigar” by all-time great, Pink Floyd. I’m a sucker for similes and imagery in music, and I love the lyric “Threw his head back like a pelican and straightened his tie-ie-ie-ie”.

Overall, I can’t recommend checking out Wunderhorse enough, especially their debut album, Cub, and be on the lookout for Midas, the album, which is set for release on August 30th. I am seriously looking forward to watching these guys grow, and I think once they get a bit more traction, they’ll catch on fire.
