Rebel Rebel – Seu Jorge

&
Metamorfose Ambulante – Raul Seixas

Happy Friday! So I decided to do two songs in todays post due to the slight connection between them.
Seu Jorge is a Brazilian artist, whom I was first introduced to in the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, by one of my favorite directors, Wes Anderson. A few of his movies are on my all time favorites list, and this is a really interesting one. It also features one of my favorite people in the world, Bill Murray. Check it out if you have a chance! Anderson’s style is definitely not for everyone, but I happen to really enjoy it. Anywho, The Life Aquatic features Seu Jorge as an actor, but he heavily contributed to the soundtrack, which happens to have a ton of David Bowie on it, another one of my all time favorites. You can never have too much Bowie. I stand by that. Seu Jorge performs multiple covers of Bowie songs, in Portugeuse, throughout the movie, and even released a studio album of them with even more covers that aren’t in the movie. I love that he does it all on a classical acoustic, with nylon strings, which is the first style of guitar that I learned on. It’s extremely chill, and if you’re familiar with Bowie’s catalouge, very very cool. It’s really a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest to ever do it.
I decided to feature “Rebel Rebel” because it was the first Bowie song I really fell in love with, sometime in middle school.

The connection with the next track, “Metamorfose Ambulance” by Raul Seixas is also through Jorge, with it being featured in the soundtrack to one of my favorite (probably top 10 to be honest) films of all time, City of God. Jorge plays an important role in the movie, and I believe it is his first real acting credit. I won’t go into too much detail on the film, but it is another one I cannot reccomend enough. I will give a warning, it features some very heavy scenes and themes, and it’s probably not for everyone, but it remains one of the best films ever made, in my opinion. Unfortunately, I don’t speak a lick of Portuguese! So it’s a bit hard for me to break down any lyrics, but judging by the title of the song as well as the overall vibe seems to be about transformation and evolving. I really know nothing about Raul Seixas, but I’m assuming he’s a pretty big deal in Brazil. I’m linking a video below of the “Rockin’ 1000” performance of it as well. If you’re unfamiliar, please check out their YouTube channel! They are an outstaning testament to the power of music. Pretty damn incredible stuff when you really think about it.
