Malibu & Assorted Covers – Miley Cyrus

Happy Friday! I don’t really listen to much modern pop music for a multitude of reasons, but I really love Miley Cyrus’s voice. I think she has one of the better voices in music today, actually. I love when she covers songs, and I’ll link some of my favorite covers she’s done below.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m a “true” fan of hers or anything like that, and this is the only original song of hers that I have saved to my library. Not because I think her music is bad or anything like that, I just don’t really enjoy modern pop music for the most part. That being said, “Malibu” is a great love song that is super easy to listen to, and I find it really relaxing. I also have to give Miley credit for writing this one by herself. A fun love song, with a relaxing vibe.

Covers

Zombie – originally by The Cranberries – One of the greatest and most iconic rock songs ever recorded, I think this is style of music that fits Miley’s voice best, however she does great work across multiple genres

Back to Black – originally by Amy Winehouse – Amy Winehouse made some of the greatest music ever, and she remains one of my all time favorites. I listen to Amy in heavy rotation. I think Miley does a good job with this one, and interestingly, Mark Ronson is playing piano for her. (Interesting if you know Amy and Mark’s history)

Nothing Else Matters – Originally by Metallica – I am a Metallica enthusiast, and when The Blacklist tribute album was announced, I was pretty pumped to see Miley was covering “Nothing Else Matters“. Before the album was announced, I had always thought she would do well on that song. To make it more cool, in this version, you’ve got Robert Trujillo of Metallica on bass, Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers on Drums, ELTON JOHN on piano, Andrew Watt (give him a goog) on guitar, and Yo-Yo Ma, because why not.

Extra thought because I have the time – It seems like Miley’s version was intended to be “the” song from The Blacklist, due to promo and having Sir Elton and Yo-Yo play on it, but I would highly recommend Chris Stapleton’s cover of the same song, also from The Blacklist. I think he takes the cake here, but that is not to discredit Miley in any way. I think you could but Stapleton up against any vocalist ever and he would give them a run for their money.
