BULLDOG – Laundry Day

I was introduced to Laundry Day in college through the busted and blown-out speakers of a ’94 Geo Prism by one of my best friends before we really became close. Looking back, it may have actually been the first time we drove somewhere together outside of work. I do remember asking about the music, which I believe was from their album We Switched Bodies, one of the best indie rock/pop albums I’ve heard. Fast forward a year or two, and that same friend and I got to see Laundry Day at Smith’s in the Atlanta room with around 75 other people. Can’t beat it. For how young these guys are, they are truly outstanding performers and musicians, with some of seriously creative music.
For me, “BULLDOG” touches on themes of emotion and reflection and features a fairly heavy dose of self-awareness as well. I think the overarching theme of this song is relationships, or perhaps a longing for one; however, these lyrics are definitely open to interpretation. I like the changes in melodies throughout the song, and I really, really love the tone of the guitar throughout the song. The instrumentation on this song really reminds me of Kanye West, believe it or not. The way the bass production and guitar are utilized throughout reminds me of his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
