My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song of the Day August 29th, 2024

Evergreen – Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners feat. Caamp

I actually knew the original version of this song by Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners before it’s resurgence on TikTok recently, however, I do have to unfortunately give TikTok the credit for reminding me of how great this song is. “Evergreen“, in its original form, is only a minute and a half, and the lyrics come in the form of a 30 second poem that really can hit home at times.

Locked in a stalemate
With a man who bars no holds
Rock and a hard place
He’s battering control

What am I waiting for?
Feet planted beneath
My compass, my transport

For me, this song represents the transition to early adulthood, and/or the struggle to find what we’re looking for in various capacities, at different stages in life.

I was originally going to just write about the original version of “Evergreen” in today’s post, but the lead singer of Caamp, Taylor Meier, is featured on this version, and he has one of my favorite voices in music today. This version is also considerably longer, about double the time of the original (still only 3 minutes). He adds his own verse, just as short as the first. I would love to hear a version of this song sung by just Meier with a single guitar.
