Graveyard Shift – Uncle Tupelo

Before there was Wilco, there was Uncle Tupelo. If you’re a fan of Jeff Tweedy or Wilco, you’re probably familiar with the aforementioned trivia, with Wilco forming after singer Jay Farrar departed from the influential but never quite breaking into the mainstream Uncle Tupelo. In their six-year lifespan as a band, they managed to produce one of my all-time favorite records, No Depression. I remember discovering the album pretty early in high school and listening to it nonstop for a couple of weeks, driving to and from school, and giving it a pretty consistent listen from then on. Without realizing it, this was my intro into the genre of alternative country music.
I decided to go with one of the group’s more well-known songs, my first or second favorite from No Depression titled “Graveyard Shift“. I love how fast-paced this one is, and it’s got some of my favorite guitar licks of all time. Some nice working-class lyrics as well, this is a killer twangy rock track from one of my favorite alternative country albums.
