Time To Get A Gun – Fred Eaglesmith

I was first introduced to this song by Miranda Lambert at a young age, who covered it on her great album Revolution, and up until recently, I was under the impression that this was her song. I have been wanting to look into Fred Eaglesmith‘s work for a while now, as the Canadian alt-country singer has quite the reputation as a storyteller. I was familiar with his song “Trucker Speed” due to a recent semi-resurgence in online popularity. Last night, I finally looked into his discography, and lo and behold, he wrote one of the songs I grew up on!

Time To Get A Gun is a great alt-country tune, a lighthearted and somewhat humorous song but with a tinge of seriousness to it. Lyrically, it’s pretty straightforward, so I’ll leave it up to y’all to decide what you think of them. I love the rustic feel of the song, especially the classic combo of a banjo and a single snare driving everything along. The organ in the back is also a really nice touch.
