Hummer – Smashing Pumpkins

Certain groups or musicians have certain sounds or tones associated with them, and the Smashing Pumpkins would certainly fall under “fuzzy.” Really, not until more recently did I become a real fan of the SP, with most of my listening history being limited to what was on the radio or “90’s essentials.” I also used to really not be able to stand Billy Corgan; I mean seriously, the guy was like nails on a chalkboard to me in all capacities. Anytime I saw a quote or anything, I would shudder. I really can’t remember the reason for this; I think maybe his voice irked me? It turns out he’s actually a pretty chill guy; he even has a second career as a professional wrestling promoter. I finally took some time a few years ago to listen to a couple of their albums, and I would consider myself a pretty big fan now. James Iha is one of my favorite guitarists, who I think falls into the “overlooked” category rather than “underrated”; I think his talent is most of the time overshadowed by Corgan’s aura or persona. Siamese Dream and Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness are two of the best rock albums of this era.
I almost featured Siamese Dream as the album of the month for October, and there’s still a good chance that can happen for November, but I decided to feature one of my favorites early, “Hummer.” This is one of the most “Smashing Pumpkins” songs the Smashing Pumpkins have ever made, possibly their best in my opinion. I love the rhythm section in this song; the groove created by the bass and drums is on point. When the guitar kicks in, I really enjoy listening to all the different layers of music. Aside from the fuzzy sounds, I think I associate a “quiet then loud” pattern in songs with the Pumpkins, and “Hummer” is a great example of this. The last minute or so of music is really pleasant to listen to as well. Lyrically, “Hummer” stumps me a bit. I’ve seen a couple of different takes; some say it’s about a relationship ending, others seem to think it takes a pretty nihilistic point of view on life while some folks think it’s the total opposite and has a very positive outlook. I think I fall into the latter category, or maybe a mix of the second and third. “Embrace the suck” is more of the vibe I get.
