My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song of the Day November 27th, 2024

Pictures of You (Feat. Kate Bollinger) – Drugdealer

Drugdealer is a cool little project from the mind of Michael Collins, and the album Hiding In Plain Sight draws heavy inspiration from a late 60s, early 70s sound that was coming out of the West Coast. If you’ve ever seen the outstanding “Documentary Now” show from the minds of Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, there’s a particular episode featuring the fictitious but legendary Blue Jean Committee and the making of their album Catalina Breeze. Not really Spinal Tap, but it is a really funny take on musicians of that era and modern music documentaries. Armisen is a pretty accomplished musician, and they actually recorded a couple of songs as the BJC. Hiding In Plain Sight by Drugdealer is pretty much the closest thing I think we’ll ever get in terms of a real Catalina Breeze, so if you’re interested in feeling like you’ve got a warm breeze in your face while cruisin’ down the PCH (that has to be a lyric somewhere, right?), give the album a try.

I chose to feature my favorite off the album today, called “Pictures of You,” featuring Kate Bollinger on vocals. I came across this song through a “songs you may like” suggestion on Apple or Spotify. What initially caught my attention was the guitar solo; it’s super clean and just really pleasing to hear. I ran the song back and really fell in love with the instrumentation as a whole, and Kate’s vocals fit the vibe perfectly.
