Three Dimes Down – Mike Cooley (Drive By Truckers)

Happy Friday the 13th!

I had the pleasure of seeing Mike Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers with about 50 others last night at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. My buddy and I, who went together, have seen the Truckers a couple of times, but this was our first time seeing one of them without the rest of the band, and both of our first times at Eddie’s. Mike was rolling solo, with two guitars and a looper pedal. Pretty incredible stuff. He played a great mix of well-known Truckers songs and some deep cuts that I probably wouldn’t be able to hear otherwise. Mike is one of my favorite artists, so this was a really cool experience for me.

One of my favorite Truckers songs, “Three Dimes Down” is a thinly veiled allusion to an attempt at a ménage à trois, and being five cents short. It’s a super fun rock song that just makes you want to sing along or play air guitar with. I really like Mike’s mellowed-out version from his solo acoustic album The Fool on Every Corner, and while he didn’t perform it last night, I thought I’d share it with y’all.
