My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Silver Lining – Mt. Joy

Mt. Joy is a five-piece indie band out of Philly who have been making the festival rounds and touring as a supporting act for a while now. I’ll admit, this is one of only two songs that I know by them, but I feel like I see their name everywhere, whether it be from Spotify and Apple Music curated playlists, or festival lineup posters, they seem to be a staple in the indie music world of today.

The focus of “Silver Lining” is on the lyrics, which are pretty straightforward in meaning and deliver a powerful message. You can feel the passion and pleading in the singer’s voice, but he still manages to make the song fairly uplifting, with the overall feel of the song having a hopeful undertone. I think the message applies to a lot more than just drug addiction, but the lyrics don’t leave much allusion either. Of course, the beauty of music and good lyrics is that you can take them however they apply to you best.

Musically, it reminds me a lot of the style that bands like The Lumineers made popular, often very unjustly criticized and lumped into the “stomp, clap, and suspenders” style that seemed to have a chokehold on the early 2010s. Well, pretentious critics all be damned, the so-called “stomp clap beat” bands got popular for a reason; there are some damn good songs that came out of that era. The Lumineers, in particular, get a ton of unnecessary hate, mostly because of how much radio loved their music. If you get past radio darling “Ho Hey” (which is a good song, just overplayed, to this day), they are behind some of the coolest lyrical storytelling in modern music.
