Blown Away – Youth Brigade

To be honest, I think I was first introduced to “Blown Away” sometime in middle school through none other than the video game Grand Theft Auto V. GTA V has one of the best soundtracks across all of gaming, mostly due to the incredibly in-depth in-game radio stations. Anywho, after the introduction to Youth Brigade from the game, I became somewhat of a frequent listener, and they were certainly instrumental in my appreciation of punk rock.
Blown Away is just a classic no-frills punk rock song, hard, fast, aggressive in all aspects musically and lyrically. I really love how angry the rhythm section, in particular, sounds here; the drums are pissed off, and the bass playing reminds me of Lemmy‘s work on “Ace of Spades.” There is a really cool bass solo that starts around the two-minute mark.
Lyrically, I think this one belongs in the same category as Black Sabbath‘s “War Pigs,” and there is a really cool inclusion of part of a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson‘s work “The Lotus Eaters.”
“Death is the end of life…Why should life all labour be…Let us alone; time driveth onward fast…Let us alone; what is it that will last?…Let us alone; what pleasure can we have to war with evil?…Is there any peace?”
