Blue in Green – Miles Davis

I don’t know where all you guys are located, but where I am, we have been dealing with the bitter cold as of late and some pretty dreary and cloudy days. Today’s song, “Blue in Green,” part of Miles Davis‘ masterpiece Kind of Blue, seems to fit the vibes of the weather as of late very well.

Early Miles Davis is really the only jazz I’ve ever gotten into, save for a little Chet Baker here and there. Kind of Blue is one of my favorite records to play when I’m relaxing, and Sketches of Spain is one of my favorites to put on while cooking. Miles is a master at evoking emotion without words, and “Blue in Green” is a perfect example of this. It seems to be fairly well known that Bill Evans, Miles’ piano player on Kind of Blue, is the actual composer of Kind of Blue, with Miles writing the first three bars and Evans doing the rest, even though Davis is the only one officially credited on Kind of Blue. It doesn’t seem like Bill was very bothered by this, though. Regardless of who wrote it, the playing by both Evans and Davis is absolutely phenomenal, translating an almost gut-wrenching feeling when you really tune in.
