My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song(s) of the Day January 23rd, 2025

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday, to make up for it today will feature two songs.

The Bold Arrow of Time – Tame Impala

&

The W.A.N.D – The Flaming Lips

The Bold Arrow of Time

In an album (Tame Impala‘s full length debut) with heavy, and I mean, HEAVY, Beatles influence, “The Bold Arrow of Time” stands out. I think its a really cool track that blends together some of the prominent sounds of the 60s. The opening riff is nasty, (this is a good nasty) that is reminiscent of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” followed up with some really heavy fuzz, almost reminding me of Hendrix‘s playing. The vocals are pretty psychedelic sounding, and the ending to the song reminds me a ton of The Kinks if you were to mix them together with Black Sabbath. The outro, while very different from the song as a whole reminds me of a modern science fiction film. For me this song is an awesome tribute to the rock music of the 1960’s.

The W.A.N.D

Another fuzz-filled song, The Flaming Lips‘ “The W.A.N.D.” I think also draws on influence from the ’60s, but takes on a more modern vibe than the aforementioned song. The thick riff sounds like if you were able to harness a Tesla coil (you probably can) and run the current through an amp. (Is that just what electric guitar is?) This is a super fun song with a really cool melody, and it’s pretty easy to bob along with. It’s great for a drive on the way to do something fun with friends, or maybe even a good one to start a road trip with.
