My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song of the day January 30th, 2025

Sao Lam Plearn – Chaweewan Dumnern

Continuing with yesterday’s theme of world music, here’s some Thai psychedelic folk from the 60s or 70s. (couldn’t track down a release date) I have zero ideas about how this song ended up in my library, but with a riff that seems to take inspiration from The StonesJumpin’ Jack Flash” and some trippy background noises, Chaweewan Dumnern‘s “Sao Lam Plearn” is certainly an interesting listen.

“Sao Lam Plearn” roughly translates to “beautiful singing voice”, and Chaweewan was named as one of Thailand’s national artists in 1993.

I really like the instrumentation on this one, in particular the bass work. It feels like something you’d here in the background while Anthony Bourdain gives one of his iconic monologues about the wonders of some foreign land. I really enjoy coming across songs like this, funky little tunes that just seem to randomly appear in my listening-sphere, that usually lead to discovering more world music that I otherwise probably wouldn’t have ventured into.
