In Bloom – Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson covering Nirvana. A perfect union of contrary things. Sturgill remains one of my favorite modern country musicians, and in all honesty probably one of my favorite artists of all time. I was first made aware of him when this album, A Sailor’s Guide To Earth came out in 2016, and then ventured into his back catalogue and was blown away. He remains one of the most entertaining and mysterious artists in country music today.
Nirvana’s “In Bloom” was my favorite Nirvana song when I was in elementary school (behind “Teen Spirit,” of course), and to hear a version of such a heavy song played in the laid-back style that Sturgill performs it, featuring mellowed-out instruments and some of my favorite pedal steel ever recorded, was mind-blowing for me at the time.
I have a pretty passionate dislike for “mainstream radio” country, and it is super refreshing to know that guys like Sturgill, Billy Strings, and many others are keeping the genre alive.
