In Circles – Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate‘s 1994 album Diary is one of the most underappreciated and often overlooked rock albums of the 90s, often credited with helping to define the genre that would become “midwest emo.” It features two future Foo Fighters, bass player Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith.
In Circles is a perfect name for such a melodic song. The musical melodies themselves are so easy to get lost in, with some really groovy, yet sad instrumentation. I really love the bass work and drumming in this one.
Lyrically, “In Circles” seems to be about someone trapped in an unhealthy relationship that, rather than actually getting better or worse, continues to be a revolving door of the same thing. Very much Midwest emo. The vocal performance is heavy, and you can hear the pleading in the singer’s voice.
