In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed – The Allman Brothers Band

“In Memory of Elizabeth Reed“, the first instrumental by the Allmans, composed by none other than Dickey Betts. This Friday, I am attending the Dickey Betts tribute concert in Macon and couldn’t be more excited. I’m thinking this week may just be dedicated to Dickey’s greatest contributions to the Allmans and maybe a few of his solo pieces as well.
Most Allman Bros. fans know the lore behind “Little Martha” (linked) and “Elizabeth Reed,” but if you’re unfamiliar, Dickey composed the song himself, inspired by Boz Scaggs‘ girlfriend (wife?) at the time, who was also involved with Dickey. The Allmans used to hang out in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon (Duane, Gregg, and Berry are all resting there now), and Dickey took the name Elizabeth Reed from one of the graves to conceal his involvement with Boz’s girl.
The performance from Live at the Fillmore East is one of the greatest of all time.
