Today – Tom Scott (feat. The California Dreamers)

“Today“, originally performed by Jefferson Airplane, but featured today as the jazz saxophonist Tom Scott‘s rendition. Tom is a pretty cool dude, and was a member of the Blues Brothers, among so many other things. Check out this link and scroll down to his discography. Pretty incredible. I love finding guys that are “behind the scenes” or at least as not as publicly recognized for their musical contributions as much as they should be.
The Jefferson Airplane version of “Today” is great, and much more mellow. It reminds me a tad of “Sunday Morning” by the Velvet Underground.
I love Tom’s sax work, and I don’t really know a ton about the instrument so I’m not sure I’m qualified to talk about the technicalities of his playing. I do know, however, that he absolutely starts ripping around the 1:35 mark. Such a cool riff and solo as whole. Just an outstanding version and take on a pretty slow and laid back piece, that turns it into an exciting
