Look at Miss Ohio – Gillian Welch

I first heard “Look At Miss Ohio” in a cover done by Miranda Lambert that is really good, but I think the original by Gillian Welch is my favorite.
There’s something about the way that Gillian sings the song that perfectly matches the lyrics, almost like you can hear the longing and want in her voice, while simultaneously sounding worn down and tired. Ever since hearing the Miranda version, this song has been one of my favorite lyrical songs. There’s just something so perfect in the simplicity of the words, and the sentiment of the song is carried over so well.
Oh me oh my oh, look at Miss Ohio
She’s a-running around with her rag-top down
She says I want to do right but not right now
Gonna drive to Atlanta and live out this fantasy
Running around with the rag-top down
Yeah I want to do right but not right now
I love the instrumentation as well, nothing too fancy, much like the lyrics, but absolutely right for the song. There is a really nice solo performed by her creative partner, David Rawlings. To me, this is a rare, truly perfect song.
