The Question – Mac Miller feat. Lil Wayne

I miss Mac Miller. I get rap isn’t for everybody, and my consumption of it these days is nothing compared to what it was in high school. Mac Miller remains one of my all-time favorites, not just in terms of rap and hip hop but also just in music as a whole. Listening to his really early stuff and watching his evolution from happy-go-lucky with songs like “Kool-Aid & Frozen Pizza” to the thoughtful and introspective towards the end of his career like “2009,” and given my age at the time of all this, it was almost like growing up together in a way. While his music certainly got more “deep” as time went on, and lyrically he touched on darker tones, his indomitable positivity shone through in interviews and media appearances. His life was tragically ended a year short of the infamous 27 club, from an accidental overdose due to fentanyl lacing.
Macadelic is early Mac, with the mixtape having come out in 2012. Lyrically, nowhere near as advanced or intricate as he would eventually become, it’s still such a fun album and probably my favorite of his early stuff. In the live version I linked below, I think most will appreciate his use of a live band and playing guitar. Pretty rare in the rap world, at least especially during that time and certainly amongst rappers that are so popular today. He’s not a guitar virtuoso by any means but the dude could play well, and the way he incorperates it into his performance is perfect. I love his sense of showmanship as well. His musical creativity rivals that of anyone in the world of hip hop. The song itself is incredibly laid back, I love the beat, and featuring a fun verse from Lil Wayne, it reminds me a lot of my high school and college days.
