Hey Joe (Live) – Roy Buchanan

One of my favorite covers of one of my favorite songs by the southern bluesman Roy Buchanan, often overlooked and underappreciated. Often labeled as “the greatest unknown guitar player,” I highly recommend his 1976 set from Austin City Limits. Roy’s live rendition of Hendrix‘s ‘Hey Joe‘ is a masterpiece, rivaling other legendary Hendrix covers, but not quite at the level of, say, SRV‘s “Little Wing.” Just a hair below, though.
Roy’s ‘Hey Joe’ rendition has some of the coolest sounds I’ve ever heard come out of a guitar; oftentimes you hear people describe guitars as crying, and Roy’s Tele is absolutely wailing. The last minute or so, where he plays “Foxy Lady,” is way cool as well.
