I’m On Fire – Whitey Morgan and the 78s

I’m a big fan of covers that give us a different spin or take on songs, or just something to make it unique compared to the original. Whitey Morgan‘s “I’m on Fire” might be my favorite. Whitey is a true outlaw country singer, and I had the pleasure of seeing him with my best bud about a year ago in a pretty small venue, the day after I saw 49 Winchester. I also hit one of the best golf shots of my life. What a great weekend that was.

I like a lot of Springsteen songs, but I often find myself enjoying covers more than the original. This is nothing against the Boss; I like him and his versions of the songs just fine, but Whitey’s rendition of “I’m On Fire,” The Band‘s take on “Atlantic City,” or even Mat Kearney‘s live “Dancing in the Dark.” I think I don’t care for Bruce’s studio pop production as much because I really do like his live stuff a lot better. The E Street Band is killer, as we all know.

I think this is such a cool one in particular because of the unexpectedness: a fairly tender pop song being turned into an outlaw country one sung by a guy who could easily be mistaken for a Hell’s Angels MC member? Sign me up.
