Too Bad – Nickelback

There’s been a recent resurgence of late 90s and early 2000s (post-grunge?) bands, Creed, 3 Doors Down (my first concert), and perhaps to my greatest enjoyment, Nickelback. I never understood the hate they received; I think most of it stemmed from their massive popularity. Chad Kroeger, the lead singer, seems overall like a nice guy, and I think he figured out the “formula” at the time for getting a song on the radio, and the catchiness of that formula resulted in massive success. Haters gonna hate. Nickelback rocks, and they’re tons of fun. The nostalgia factor is strong.
“Too Bad” is catchy, fast, and fun, but the backstory and lyrics are a bit darker. Kroeger wrote the song about his father abandoning his family when he was just two years old. Musically, this one certainly fits the “formula” I referenced earlier, with a dramatic buildup and some picking, leading into a catchy power chord-filled chorus. It still rocks and remains a super fun listen.
