State of Love and Trust – Pearl Jam

Originally penned for the Cameron Crowe staple of the 90s, Singles, “State of Love and Trust” quickly became a fan favorite among Pearl Jammers. As someone who typically seeks out live performances, it’s no surprise that I prefer a couple of live renditions to the studio recording, in particular, the recording from their MTV Unplugged performance in 1992. Prime Vedder? Perhaps not, but he is well on his way. It’s like seeing a flash of what will be. The passion is there, just not as refined as he will become. Eddie has a unique ability to control his voice in a way that still maintains a raw power, but you can still almost feel him holding it back, like he’s wrestling with it.
It’s a ton of fun to hear the rest of the band rip on acoustics as well; Mike McCready is one of my favorite players that gets overlooked a lot, I think, in part because of the force that Eddie is. His speed is certainly impressive.
