My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

January jams!

A collection of songs I was jamming to in the month of January! In no particular order

*Excluding the Dead since I posted a bunch of their tracks in my Bobby Wier tribute

24 Hours at a Time (Live) – The Marshall Tucker Band

Toy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band, I love this picture

The Marshall Tucker Band has been in heavy rotation for me as of late. Until fairly recently, I really had no idea how great they are, especially their original lineup. “24 Hours at a Time” is a catchy tune anyways, but their jamming on it in the live renditions takes it to another level.

So Into You – Atlanta Rhythm Section

Another big southern rock hit, “So Into You” is one of the grooviest tracks ever recorded. Atlanta Rhythm Section has some absolute heaters under their catalog and I wish that they were a little more well known nationally. Growing up in Georgia, they were pretty prevalent, but I rarely hear them discussed these days in various music forums outside of the state.

I Been To Georgia On A Fast Train – Billy Joe Shaver

I love this song. It’s just one of those that instantly puts me in a good mood. It reminds me a lot of Jerry Reed as well, who is an all time favorite of mine. Billy Joe is one of the greats when it comes to song writing, and an absolute Texan legend.

I’ve been to Georgia on a fast train, honey
I wasn’t born no yesterday
I got a good Christian raisin’ and an eighth grade education
And ain’t no need in y’all a treatin’ me this way

What else do you need?

Dreadful Selfish Crime – Robert Earl Keen

Robert Earl Keen has quickly become one of my favorite country singers, and his songwriting ability belongs in the same discussions as John Prine and Isbell. REK’s body of work is a treasure trove filled with gems. The more I listen to him, the more I discover.

(I lied, there is some Dead in here. It’s hidden well, but so cool if you pick up on it.)
