My Taste in Music

Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song(s) of the day August 8th, 2024

Fool Hearted & Veruca Salt – 49 Winchester

Okay, I promise this will be my last 49 post for a while. To avoid posting them four weeks in a row, I decided to feature both these 49 songs on the same day because they’re on the same album, The Wind. It also happens to be my favorite album by them, if you have an hour I highly recommend giving the whole thing a listen.

Fool Hearted – Some of my favorite vocals ever recorded are on this track. I just love what Isaac does with this, increasing the speed at which he sings at certain parts, almost like he’s fighting the tempo of the song. The song has some great lyrics as well, and as you can probably guess from the title, “Fool Hearted,” it’s about falling for someone you know you shouldn’t, and following your fool’s heart for longer than you should, knowing it ain’t gonna end well. I love the banjo that carries this song along as well as the harmonica in the intro; however short, is really nice as well.

Veruca Salt – Man, Isaac, who broke your heart? Should I tell them thanks? Thanks for breaking my boys heart because I don’t know how else he could’ve come up with such brutally amazing song without the hurt you caused him. The first time I listened to it, and heard the the lyrics,

“But you’re too goddamn self righteous for the righteous hand of God
You’re the ultimate example of why not to spare the rod”

I actually ran the track back about fifteen seconds to make sure I heard him right. Wow. I love it though. So much agony is in this song, lyrically, and in the vocals you can hear the feelings in Isaac’s voice. Another one with a nice driving banjo, and some really nice guitar work as well. Probably my favorite song by the boys from 49 Winchester Street, Castlewood, Virginia.
