Songs of the day, albums of the month, and why I like them

Song of the day February 26th, 2025

Blue Sky – The Allman Brothers Band

Continuing the theme of Dickey Betts this week, a classic Allman tune that is almost guaranteed to put you in a good mood or a smile on your face. Also keeping with the theme of Dickey writing songs for the women in his life.

Dickey’s debut as a vocalist, “Blue Sky,” is genuinely one of the sweetest love songs ever written. Written for his then-girlfriend, later wife for a short while, Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig.

You’re my blue sky, you’re my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way,
Turn your love my way

On the song itself, Dickey said “Once I got into the song I realized how nice it would be to keep the vernaculars—he and she—out and make it like you’re thinking of the spirit, like I was giving thanks for a beautiful day. I think that made it broader and more relatable to anyone and everyone

Musically, “Blue Sky” has quite the twang to it. Duane and Dickey switch off playing lead throughout the song, Duane’s solo starting at 1:07, Dickey duetting with him at 2:28, and then followed by Betts’s solo at 2:37.
